Roborock S8 Max V Ultra
Since I got sent a Roborock S8 Max V Ultra, Roborock’s newest top-of-the-line vacuum. After spending few months with the one that Roborock sent me, not only is it a home appliance I couldn’t live without, but it’s the best robot vacuum I’ve ever tested.
Highlights of the Roborock S8 Max V Ultra
The first standout feature of the S8 Max V Ultra is its RGB camera system. This feature, which many robot vacuums lack, plays a crucial role in navigation. It ensures the robot avoids obstacles like shoes, power strips, and bathroom scales while efficiently returning to its dock. Over 6 months, it has avoided most obstacles in my apartment.
If you’re worried about privacy with an RGB camera, Roborock offers models without cameras and microphones, but I’ve found that these lack the precision of the RGB camera models. Combined with a LiDAR sensor and additional light for dark rooms, the RGB camera ensures the S8 Max V navigates effortlessly, making it a significant upgrade from earlier models like the S8 Pro Ultra.
Smart Cleaning with Minimal Input
The Smart Plan feature makes cleaning effortless. Simply select the rooms to clean, and the robot adjusts modes based on the floor type. The intelligent dirt detection decides if the mop needs rewashing for dirtier areas, delivering a spotless finish.
Its mopping performance, enhanced by the VibraRise 3.0 system, is a game-changer. The mop lifts higher off the ground, ensuring carpets remain dry during transitions. I’ve barely used a manual mop in the past 6 months.
Dock Features That Do It All
The S8 Max V Ultra dock automates almost every maintenance task:
- Empties the dustbin
- Refills water
- Washes the mop with hot water
- Dries the mop with a heater
- Dispenses cleaning solution when needed
Maintenance is minimal—cleaning sensors, emptying water tanks bi-weekly, and occasional filter cleaning. For those wanting even less hassle, Roborock offers a dock that connects directly to your plumbing.
User-Friendly App and Setup
The Roborock app offers everything you need for multi-level mapping, cleaning schedules, and dock settings. You can control the robot manually, set routines, or even use voice commands. Setup is straightforward, with sustainable packaging and clear instructions.
Features You Might Not Use
Some features, like the remote viewing and on-device assistant (Rocky), are nice but not essential. The pet-specific features, like stopping brushes near pets and sending pet photos, are more novelty than necessity for me.
Downsides
While the S8 Max V Ultra is exceptional, it’s not perfect:
- Object Avoidance: It occasionally misses small items like socks or plant runners, leading to minor messes.
- Edge Cleaning: Like most robot vacuums, it struggles with carpet edges.
- Connectivity: Only supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, which could be an issue for some users.
- Price: At $1,800, it’s expensive compared to competitors like the Roomba Combo j10+ Max.
Is It Worth It?
The Roborock S8 Max V Ultra is the most advanced robot vacuum I’ve tested. It excels in suction, mopping, and navigation. However, its steep price makes it a tough sell unless you find it on sale for closer to $1,200.
If automated cleaning is worth the cost for you, this robot delivers on its promises.
